Clobazam : Therapeutic uses, Dosage & Side Effects

Clobazam is a Benzodiazepine, used for treating a certain type of seizure disorder (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome [LGS]). It is used along with other medicines. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

 Clobazam has following usage :

  • Used as anxiolytic drug (antianxiety drug) effective for the treatment of the anxiety disorder symptoms secondary to panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, performance anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and extreme anxiety associated with phobias, such as fear of flying.
  • Used as anticonvulsant drug, especially emergency control of status epilepticus, febrile convulsions, tetanus. It is the drugs of choice in terminating status epilepticus.
  • Useful in the acute treatment of alcohol withdrawal and reduce the risk of withdrawal-related seizures
    • Benzodiazepines drugs should be reserved for severe anxiety only and not used to manage the stress of everyday life.
    • Because of their addiction potential, they should only be used for short periods of time.
  • Side effects : Benzodiazepines are relatively safe drugs; Side effects of Clobazam are as following :
    • Drowsiness and confusion (most common),
    • Dizziness, vertigo,
    • Disorientation,
    • Amnesia,
    • Ataxia occurs at high doses and precludes activities that require fine motor coordination, such as driving an automobile,
    • Cognitive impairment (decreased long-term recall, retention of new knowledge & prolongation of reaction time-impairment of psychomotor skills) can occur with use of benzodiazepines.
    • Agitation, panic reaction,
    • Tremors & delirium.

    Contraindications :

    • Benzodiazepines should be used cautiously in patients with liver disease.
    • These drugs should be avoided in patients with acute angleclosure glaucoma.
